Review of Sutton Shields' Finned

Review of Sutton Shields' Finned

Reading this YA book was a nice change from some of the other YA books I've read. It was my first 'mermaid' read, but not my first under water adventure. For the most part it was an easy read, which is a good thing for the YA demographic. I could easily see recommending this book to young, high school aged girls, but as an adult I really enjoyed reading a book that wasn't filled with sex and swear words. It's the kind of book I was able to get into from the very beginning and something that I loved reading until the end.

I loved the character of Marina right off the bat. She was spunky and the kind of girl I could see being friends with while I was in high school. She certainly had her quirks but my favorite part was the pop culture that was seamlessly mixed into the story. It always had a good placement and fit with the situation that was going on with the characters. It made me think of one of my favorite shows, Gilmore Girls, with how it was easily placed into the language of the Character.

I love how light hearted the book as a whole was. Sure there were some challenging parts to the story but it wouldn't be a good book without it of course. There were some surprise elements thrown in there which I guarantee one for sure completely threw me off. It was a nice surprise since I see a lot of surprises in books. I loved that I wasn't expecting it. I loved Chapter 17. It was my favorite chapter in the whole book. No spoilers! It's equal counter part would be Chapter 23. I enjoyed the darkness that it dipped into and the craziness of some of the bad characters. I thoroughly HATED a couple characters which was a great comparison to how much I loved some of the others.

My other favorite character was Treeva. She brought a great balance to the 'Gilmore' essence of the book even though I'm sure that's not what the author was quite going for. There are a few characters that I'm curious to know more about and hope to see more of in the next books or maybe even stories separate from this series. I can't wait to read Wave 2.

Reviews to come!

Well I've been sick for the last few weeks so my progress in doing reviews and any writing have come to a screeching halt as I not only have to take care of myself my my two kids as well. I'm hoping that I'll be back to self soon so that I'll be able to do some reading and reviews of some pretty good authors. I've done a lot of reading in the past and it's about time to share my knowledge with others. Lol.

I'm also trying to do some of my own writing. I have SEVERAL projects in the works and recently have acquired a new character I have yet to find a place for. I love the character but she really could have come at such a not so great time since I have other projects to work on as it is. Oh well. In time it will all work out. For all I know I'll be publishing back to back. That might be cool on one hand, but on the other, I could run out of ideas. That wouldn't be cool.

Anyway, here's to up coming weeks of better health and more reading/writing!
